RESEARCH
The goal of Learning In Deed’s Research Network
is to promote communication among service-learning and educational
reform researchers and practitioners and to stimulate more and better
quality research in K-12 service-learning. Our work is focused in
three broad areas:
Communication:
- Provide an opportunity for researchers to share information
about results and methodologies and discuss implications of
their research.
- Establish communication vehicles that enable researchers to
grapple with issues, find commonalities and help members build
on each other’s research.
- Summarize the best evidence from the research in areas related
to service-learning.
- Disseminate valid and reliable results of service-learning
studies to the field.
Capacity Building:
- Assess the research needs within K-12 service-learning and
related fields.
- Convene researchers in service-learning and related education
reform fields to focus on research needs, findings of impact
and value, areas for collaboration and potential funders.
- Focus, stimulate and coordinate a research base for service-learning
and help build a national research agenda.
- Help attract funding for high quality research within the
field.
Connectedness:
- Link research in service-learning and other related areas
to practice and provide a vehicle for practitioners to discuss
the implications of research for practice in a variety of fields.
- Collaborate with other research networks related to service-learning
to coordinate efforts and advance the field.

2nd Annual Service-Learning Research Conference
Call for Proposals Out
The Second Annual International Conference on Service-Learning
Research will be held at Loew's Vanderbilt Plaza adjacent to the
Vanderbilt University Campus in Nashville, Tennessee, Oct 20- Oct
22, 2002. Researchers, policymakers and practitioners interested
in the latest advances in service-learning research are invited
to attend.
In October of 2001, the long awaited First Annual International
Conference on Service-Learning Research was held in Berkeley and
brought 350 researchers, policymakers and others interested in service-learning
research together to share and hear about new findings, research
agendas and explore research interests. This year, we will convene
the Second Annual International Conference in Nashville, Tennessee
to build on this work. International scholars and practitioners
who are actively engaged in service-learning research are invited
to present their most recent breakthroughs in research findings,
methodological approaches and theoretical advances at all levels:
K-12 education, teacher education and higher education. We are also
particularly interested in presentations from researchers in related
fields whose theoretical or methodological approaches have something
to offer to the service-learning research field.
Call for Proposals:
Proposals for paper or special topic presentations for this peer
reviewed program are due by 5 PM MT April 19, 2002.
The Call for Proposals is available in PDF file on the conference
