We would like to invite you to an exciting event tailored especially
for you!
The Washington State Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction
and
Washington State University Cooperative Extension 4-H Youth Development
Division are excited to host The 13th National Service-Learning
Conference
"Reflecting on the past, Envisioning the future" March
20 - 23, 2002, at the Washington Convention and Trade Center in
Seattle. As you may know, this annual conference, sponsored by the
National Youth Leadership Council, seeks to promote and further
the field of service-learning among K-12 education, higher education
and community-based organizations. Please visit the NYLC Web site

This is the first time that efforts have been made to offer a new
track designed especially for state and district superintendents.
This one-day event is hosted by The Compact for Learning and Citizenship
(CLC), a national organization of chief state school officers and
district superintendents advocating for high-quality service-learning
experiences for every student at the K-12 level. CLC knows the importance
of having education leaders and state and district policymakers
knowledgeable about what constitutes high-quality service-learning
practice, what supportive policies are necessary for sustaining
the effort and the necessary infrastructure to do both well - all
in an effort to improve academic and student achievement and performance.
Your participation in these events will provide you with the knowledge
and a framework about service-learning, the positive learning impacts
that occur through service-learning, as well as network you with
other resources and contacts for continued discussion and support.
This one-day track will be held on Thursday, March 21st, and is
offered to you at a special conference registration rate of $100.
This will allow you access to the full day's activities consisting
of:
- An opening plenary session keynoted by Shirley Sagawa, Director
for the Corporation for National Service;
- A special keynote presentation by Special Olympics President
and CEO Tim Shriver;
- Demonstrations and discussions with students about their service-learning
projects and programs called the Washington Showcase;
- Lunch; and
- Regional networking and discussion groups on your areas of concern.
Mark your calendars now so that you won't miss this opportunity
to meet your colleagues from across the nation to learn more about
service-learning and what it can do for your students, your school
and your community.
Please mail or fax the registration
form
to NYLC in order to participate in this very-special event. Please
note that space is limited so register early so that you won't be
left out.
